USPS to Increase Postal Rates & Overweight Fees in January 2025

One major change is the introduction of new handling fees for live animals and perishable items. USPS will charge $7.50 for Priority Mail Express and USPS Ground Advantage, and $15 for Priority Mail.

Additionally, USPS will significantly raise the fees for overweight items. The previous $100 surcharge for items weighing over 70 lbs will double to $200 in 2025.

The USPS Ground Advantage service will see an average price increase of 3.9%, with retail prices rising by 4.9% and commercial customer rates increasing by 3.2%. In Alaska, limited land routes will experience a 9.0% price hike.

Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express services will also see a 3.2% increase. Other services, such as package intercepts and address corrections, will increase to $18.35 and $3.00, respectively.

On the international front, USPS will raise prices for International Priority Mail and Expedited Services by 4.9%. Specific international services, like International Priority Airmail (IPA) and International Surface Air Lift (ISAL), will see price increases of 4.9% and 28.9%, respectively.

With USPS implementing significant price hikes in 2025, businesses and individuals will need to prepare for increased shipping costs, especially for overweight and international shipments. As shipping fees rise, it’s crucial to explore reliable and cost-effective alternatives.
